Laceration

Laceration

The Merriam-Webster definition of Laceration is “a torn and ragged wound” or “the act of lacerating”. In order to understand the definition we have to understand the definition of lacerating which is to “to tear or rend roughly wound jaggedly” or “to cause sharp mental or emotional pain to DISTRESS”.

“Everyone want change, you wanted change but no one what’s to change
now we’re all really the same…”
-Written Letter To You.

“Laceration”, is an artistic visualization of what the Black community goes through, from the systematic racial profiling to the blood, sweat, and tears of their history. The project is fully inspired by an old documentary photo called “Whipped Peter”. I wanted these photo to represent the brokenness of a people the dark void of sadness from an individual. I wanted these photos to speak for my friends and neighbors since words seems to not work. I have no rights to talk about what they go through as a community but who are we to not support a community that’s suffering.

In today’s world Mental Illness is a big topic but why is it not talked about in the Black community? Why don’t we ask if our Black friends, neighbors, and family are doing well with their mental and physical health? Yet have we as a collective ever put a thought into the idea that their dark history of slavery and systematic racism has a play with their mental health. Have we as humanity failed the Black community?

These photo’s may not change history but if we’re able to help others understand or just being able to help other be open to the idea that there’s a broken community that need help, That maybe enough to spark a change for a better future for everyone.

It is a honor to receive the Bronze award for this series. It is already an honor for people to be able to view and appreciate my work. To others it my not mean a lot to be a Bronze winner but this is definitely the first step towards my goal as a creator/story-teller.
I really appreciate the views and readers taking their time to soak themselves in the stories I wanted to tell.
